People that work more hours in a week are known to be less likely to use substances, according to a National Survey on Drug Use and Health between 2005 and 2011.

About 8% of full-time employees, as opposed to the 10% of part-time employees and 18% of jobless persons, used illicit substances in the previous month.

Unemployment and drug misuse have also been linked in other research. Among young people, there seems to be a substantial link between drug use, alcohol, and unemployment.

Unemployment was linked to high episodic drinking and cigarette smoking in one investigation of this cohort.
